A Winter Retreat with Sarah Baumert and Eva Mohn

February 15 – 18, 2018

This retreat will be an offering that focuses on self-care in a supportive community.  These four days will be set aside to cultivate a therapeutic inward focus through yoga and meditation practices as well as time for one to engage with creative parts of one’s self through drawing, writing, reading, group conversations, and any other inquiry or personal need that one has.  We want to offer guidance as well as free spaces so that this retreat can be tailored to each person’s needs, the sacredness of the introvert, and the life energy in expression.

Sarah and Eva will be your guides throughout the long weekend. Each day will consist of asana classes, guided meditation, and open space.

 

Our space will be the ARC retreat center conveniently located an hour north of the Twin Cities in Stanchfield, Minnesota. ARC is an inter-spiritual nonprofit retreat center and intentional community, serving groups and individuals of all beliefs seeking time apart, rest, and spiritual renewal. Resident volunteers make ARC happen. They welcome you home, to nourish your mind, body and soul with quiet contemplation, homemade meals and valued conversations. ARC’s intentional community members offer radical hospitality and hold the sacred space for guests to reflect, renew and heal.

The retreat space offers:

We will be staying in the Lodge, which accommodates 18 guests in 12 single rooms and 3 double rooms. Guest rooms are private with shared bathrooms. The lodge also has a meditation room, library, bookshop, large and small meeting areas, two fireplaces, a screened-in porch, and other spaces conducive to rest and reflection. Linens and towels are provided.

The simple and tasty meals respect the global view that invites us to live more with less. Part of our understanding of what it means to live a simpler lifestyle includes trying to consume less and to eat a more wholesome diet.

ARC cooks and bakes with whole grains, uses less sugar, and relies on vegetables and legumes as a primary source of protein. The kitchen is vegetarian, meat is used upon special request for dietary needs.

A bit about Eva… My dear friend and teaching partner for many years: 

Eva Mohn holds her BA in Dance Studies from the University of Minnesota. Eva has worked in Minneapolis, New York, Germany, Poland, Lithuania and Sweden as a Professional Dancer since 2002, and currently lives and works in Stockholm, Sweden with the Cullberg Ballet. She is a practitioner of contact improvisation, hatha yoga, and experiential anatomy and somatic body work. Eva has studied yoga informally through her own practice and inquiry, as well as with various teachers in the Hatha Yoga tradition, including Ashtanga Teacher Training with Richard Freeman. Eva is also a practitioner of Vipassana Meditation and when in the states she is active at Common Grounds Meditation Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota, Spirit Rock Meditation Center in Woodacres, California. Eva is also a student and practitioner of Cranial Sacral Therapy. She has found an inextricable link between yoga, science, nature, and meditative arts and the creative process.

I’m excited to announce that I will be joining Jane Reeves on her Full Moon in Toscana Loving-Kindness Retreat in May 2018!

I have known Jane for many years and have looked up to her as a teacher. She is a dedicated student and practitioner of Tibetan Buddhism, a Kripalu trained yoga teacher of over 20 years, and has led more than 50 retreats all over the world. Jane is dedicated to leading intimate retreats so that we can go inward, rest and reflect, and connect with our own wisdom and the universal wisdom around us. At it’s core, Jane’s work is centered on the teachings of loving-kindness. I can guarantee that Jane is an amazing retreat organizer and has chosen an exquisite location.

My role at the retreat will be leading the afternoon asana classes, as well as offering private yoga and yoga therapy sessions.

Our retreat location, Fattorio Del Colle is a tranquil oasis that lies in an untouched corner of the countryside, in the south of Chianti. The estate is a small hamlet miraculously unspoiled through the course of the centuries. At the heart of the hamlet stand the 16th century villa and chapel including the old sharecroppers dwellings which have been lovingly renovated into rooms of the agristurismo. Included on the property are a well known restaurant, Osteria di Donatella, a wellness space and a cooking school. The ancient land, villas, and chapel are infused with ancient charm, a dose of mystery and an invitation to unfetter your senses.

Fattoria Del Colle is home to the only all women owned winery in Italy. They produce the memorable Brunello wines. On the retreat guests will experience daily yoga, meditation, wine tasting, olive oil tastings, cooking classes, an excursion, and time to restore energy.

The estate lies on the land that gives birth to white truffles and an extraordinary extra virgin olive oil, inherited by the founder, Donatella Cinelli Colombini in 1998. Currently Fattoria del Colle grows 160 hectares of cereal crops, 6 hectares of olive groves and 17 hectares of vineyards with SangioveseMerlot, and Traminer  varieties as well as Foglia Tonda an old autochthonous vine abandoned for more than a century, that they have re-launched. The Colle’s altitude at 204 m above sea level and the great difference in temperature between day and night due to the vicinity of the  “Crete Senesi” determine the particular wealth  of aromas in the wines of this area that are intense, complex and extremely fine.

The wellness center at Fattoria del Colle offers a breath-taking view of the Val d’Orcia and Crete Senesi – Tuscany. In the wellness centre there is a Turkish bath, sauna, relaxation room, sensorial shower, foot bath and Jacuzzi. The massage room and the vinotherapy cave with its juniper wood tub, are known for their detoxifying qualities and magical elixirs. The Casato Prime Donne wines are used for bathing in and for cosmetics such as grape dust, saline wine face scrub, massage wine serum, all of which contain rejuvenating essences. All contain healing energy from the ancient land that surrounds the estate.

This retreat is ideal for those with an established yoga practice, or those who are interested in deepening a newer practice. There will be one hour of yoga asana, one hour of guided meditation, then circle gathering to process the experience each morning.

Yoga classes will be gentle and restorative in nature. Guests are invited to look into old patterns that are ready to be shed, new ways to be in their body and time out for self-compassion. We’ll gather in circles for dharma talks, sacred ritual, and sharing.

Guests are encouraged to travel to other areas in Italy before or after the retreat, so that the retreat itself can be a time for replenishment, centering into the experience at Fattoria del Colle, and embracing self-care practices.

After lunch, guests have free afternoons to take a slow stroll throughout the grounds, nap, receive an acupuncture treatment, get a massage, read a book under a tree, or simply pause into rest.

A second yoga and meditation class will be offered most afternoons between 5:00-6:00pm.

We have 1 group excursion on Wednesday to historic and stunning Siena where we will be expertly guided on a tour, then have free time to explore on our own followed by an evening dinner out.

As I have just joined the retreat team, Jane will be extending the early-bird discount through August. This includes $200 off private or shared lodging packages.

A note from Jane: 

I’ve spent considerable time immersing in Italian culture, and specifically the medieval hill towns in Tuscany. I genuinely believe Tuscany and the Val d’Orcia region is an ideal locale for retreating. Italy naturally imbues happiness through it’s beautiful cuisine, art, history, and sacred spaces. I’ve witnessed transformation within myself, and with all of my Italy retreat guests over the past few years. Tuscany is a place that once visited, engages the heart, and calls it back again and again.

My intention is for guests to surrender to a much needed break from the world while practicing morning yoga classes that are slow and steady, meditations that restore, chanting, mudra and mantra practices to enhance the experience. All of these practices help us to make friends with the moment and see our basic goodness. We’ll have magical evening ceremonies and a special guest or two!

The Feldenkrais Method® is a form of somatic education that uses gentle movement and directed attention to improve movement and enhance human functioning. Through this method, you can increase your ease and range of motion, improve your flexibility and coordination, and rediscover your innate capacity for graceful, efficient movement. These improvements will often generalize to enhance functioning in other aspects of your life.

The Feldenkrais Method is based on principles of physics, biomechanics and an empirical understanding of learning and human development. By expanding the self-image through movement sequences that bring attention to the parts of the self that are out of awareness, the method enables you to include more of yourself in your functioning movements. Students become more aware of their habitual neuromuscular patterns and rigidities and expand options for new ways of moving. By increasing sensitivity the Feldenkrais Method assists you to live your life more fully, efficiently and comfortably.

A Summer Weekend of Yoga and Somatics with Sarah Baumert

Modern life if full and busy. Let your practice slow down over the course of a full weekend of classes with conscious movements that are calming and yet very physical. Sarah’s teaching is alignment based, unhurried, and rich with somatic inquiries.

This intensive will consist of 10+ hours of study including three active classes, two restorative somatics classes, pranayama, and group discussions. The weekend is for experienced students wanting to deepen their practice.

Parent and Kids Day Retreat

The kids yoga class for this workshop will include peaceful play, mindful movement, and gentle stretching. The class will combine asana, yoga games, breath work, and meditation for inspiration and grounding. Class will be playful and touches on balance, strength, and self-awareness. No experience needed. Ages 5-10 are welcome at this workshop.

The adult portion of the day will consist of one of Sarah’s slow flow classes. Modern life is a hurried affair. Let your practice become a sanctuary of slow, conscious movement that is soothing and, yet, very physical. Our muscles are challenged in a very different way when required to support action without any assistance from momentum. Treat yourself to a luxurious and potent afternoon.

All levels are welcome.

Kelsey Lauer has been teaching and providing care to children of all ages for the past twelve years through her work as a gymnastics instructor, camp counselor, pediatric oncology nurse, and now as a Yoga Calm Certified Youth Instructor. Kelsey has a love for interacting with kids and believes the reason kids are so amazing is their resiliency, creativeness, and kindness towards others. Kelsey has been practicing yoga for ten years and combines her knowledge of yoga with childhood development to create a class perfect for children of all ages.

These 7 days will allow you the opportunity to detach from daily stress and establish a daily practice of yoga, meditation, and bodily awareness. Grow confidence in your personal yoga practice and share a sense of community during these consecutive days of asana and dialogue. A daily experience at this retreat may include: Yin/Restorative yoga to prepare for meditation sessions, active asana practice, experiential anatomy, discussion, shared meals, personal time for integration and reflection.

Yoga, known for her thorough and diverse methods of instruction, her dedication to holding space for individuals’ personal discovery and her investment in building personal relationships with her students. Sarah will be joined by Cat Murcek. Cat loves teaching to all ages and ability levels and strives to help her students discover new-ness in every class. Housing: Accommodation is offered in our lovely traditional stone house. Rooms are designed in a natural combination of old and new and are spacious and comfortable. Rooms are allocated on a first come first served basis (there is a limited availability of rooms, and single rooms in particular). The house is a 5 minutes walking distance to the village centre and beach, but also pleasantly secluded. The garden at the front and the private olive grove at the back blend in with the landscape and offer options for places to rest.

Food: The Cretan diet is renowned for its macrobiotic qualities, but also for its great variety of delicious flavors. More than the pure, fresh ingredients themselves, it is the fact that cooking is traditionally performed almost like a ritual, with love, and always in the prospect of offering the food to others, that makes the Cretan cuisine so special. Our cook embodies this spirit, preparing two nutritious lacto-vegetarian meals a day, using local, and wherever possible, organic products (grown in our own garden!).

The village restaurants, only a short walk away, offer a wide range of local dishes, including fresh fish and game.

Location: Chora (pronounced “Hora”) Sfakion or Sfakia, the capital of the municipality of Sfakia, is located on the south-west coast of Crete. The landscape of the region is particularly dramatic. The mountains in this part of Crete meet the sea, with steep slopes towering over the beaches. The road from the north of the island threads through breathtaking mountains and small villages to reach the port village of Sfakia. A sense of peacefulness radiates from the dry mountains and the sunset skies.

Sarah B Yoga  is excited to be teaming up with Pure Point Acupuncture to bring you a special yoga and acupressure workshop focused on self care for digestion. This two hour workshop will integrate yoga poses with acupressure and provide you simple, yet effective, tools to help balance digestion.

In these slow flow classes we will explore how we can clarify the use of our skeletal alignment as a means to generate and increase power in our poses, resulting in the clarification of our intentions. As is customary for Sarah, we will begin with a Feldenkrais inspired warm up. This way of beginning brings a clarity in our movement awareness, and helps to sense the most efficient and easeful way to move the bones. From there, we will move into a more activce yoga practice to further understand how our musculature reorganizes during the poses to maintain this ease and sweetness. This slow process will help one move beyond past habitual movements and learn to cultivate an internal initiation during the asanas, even those that we find most challenging. We will end our class with one of Sarah’s popular guided savasana sessions that will soothe your way into the weekend. Each class will focus on a different theme geared towards adapting our bodies to the current season. All levels are welcome.

Teacher Bios

Sarah Baumert, RYT 1000 hours, draws from years of experience working in-depth with the body through modern dance, Feldenkrais, body-mind centering, and other modalities. She facilitates whole body alignment in her students, both physically and energetically.  Sarah’s teaching is breath-inspired, focusing on flowing in and out of poses with ease, finding places that work for each individual body.  Sarah has experience working with bodies suffering from chronic pain, injury, illness  and other forms of dis-ease. With hands on adjustments, she delivers insightful results and a greater sense of ease and body awareness in her students.

Lindsey Jorgensen, L. Ac., Dipl. O. M., received her masters degree in Oriental Medicine from Northwestern Health Sciences University’s Minnesota College of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine. She is licensed as an acupuncturist by the Minnesota Board of Medical Practice and certified by the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine. Her practice treats a variety of conditions with a special interest in women’s health issues including infertility, menopause, menstrual issues, and stress reduction. Her treatment style uses a combination of clinical acupuncture protocols, time-tested Traditional Chinese Medicine knowledge, and a personal, intuitive approach to each patient as an individual.

Jamie Ryan-Karels BFA, CMT, AOS, CCMT, NCTMB – is a nationally certified massage and bodywork therapist and received her training from the prestigious Boulder College of Massage Therapy in Boulder, CO. Through this program, she earned additional certificates in Zen Shiatsu, Prenatal, Labor and Postpartum Massage and Canine Massage. She then graduated with an Associate of Occupational Studies Degree and went on to study Evolutionary CranioSacral Therapy. In 2011, Jamie started her business, Mammal Bodywork, with a vision for elevating the level of healing and wellness experienced by all living beings.
